Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources at Addis Ababa University became one of the founding members of the AU/NEPAD Central and East African Network of Water Centres of Excellence (AU/NEPAD CEANWATCE). The CEANWATCE is envisaged to be a network of Higher Education and Research Institutions responsible to conduct high-end scientific research and capacity building activities in water and water-related sectors, with sound institutional networking and experience in supporting policymaking processes across the African continent.
During the application processes Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources demonstrated a proven track record of (international standing) research performances, capacity building deliveries, financial sustainability as well as capacity to influence public policies on water.
As part of the selection process, a delegate of the selection committee with 13 representatives from NEPAD, the AU/NEPAD Southern and Western African Network of Water Centres of Excellence, African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW), the Regional Economic Communities (RECS) (Intergovernmental Authority on Development – IGAD and Economic Community of Central African States – ECCAS), UNESCO, and the European Commission (EC) visited the Institute on 5th of July 2017 having a devoted discussion and presentations with the institute’s management, staff, graduate students and University delegates.
Accordingly, AU’s centre for collaboration in Africa (AU – CCA) announced that EIWR/ AAU is one of the founding member of the AU/ NEPAD CEANWATCE along with IGAD Climate Prediction & Applications Centre in Nairobi, Geography Geo-Informatics and Climatic Sciences department of Makerere University and Water Research Centre at the University of Khartoum.
