EIWR held its First-ever PhD Defense

Elias Tedla, a PhD candidate in Water Resource Engineering and Management, successfully defended his PhD dissertation titled “Multi reservoir Operation Optimization under different Climatic Scenarios to Maximize Energy Production Efficiency” on April 24, 2015.

Elias’s work was supervised by Dr Mekonnen Gebremichael, Dr. Dereje Hailu and Dr. Solomon Seyoum; Professor Anund Killingtveit from Norway University of Science and Technology was served as external examiner for his defense, Dr Seifu Admasu ( Bahir dar University) and Dr Agizew Nigussie (Addis Ababa University) as internal examiners and Dr Azage G. Gebremariam (EIWR) as chairperson. 

The panel was pleased with the thesis defense, noting the importance of Elias’s dissertation in developing a new way of operating hydropower plants in the Omo-Gibe River Basin with adaptive operational policies that maximize energy production efficiency to cope the future multi-dimentional impact of climate change on the water resource potential of the basin.

The completed defense is a noteworthy milestone in the history of the Ethiopian Institute of Water Resources – Elias is the first candidate to defend a doctoral thesis in the PhD program, which had its inauguration in 2011.
